Katjeri Lakinyeri (Beautiful Family)
This piece is a celebration of the deep beauty found in reconnecting with my family (lakinyeri). Every time I am on country (ruwi), I am gifted with the joy of meeting someone new from my extended family. For me, and for many other Aboriginal people, these moments of connection feel like coming home. It may not be the norm for everyone, but for us, it’s woven into our spirit, our shared history. Each new family member I meet is a precious thread that ties us together, and in these reunions, there is healing.
Our disconnections stem from the pain our ancestors endured, but with every encounter, I try to bridge that gap. To meet these people, hear their stories, and realize the paths that have brought us back to each other is profoundly moving. It’s a reminder of the strength we carry, and how beautiful it is to mend the ties that link us.
The contrasting colors in this piece symbolize the diversity within our lakinyeri—the different personalities, appearances, and life journeys. Yet, despite these differences, we are all coming together, sharing knowledge, and preserving what remains of our rich cultural heritage and that is truly katjeri (beautiful).
